Safety drill to take place Tuesday

Several public safety agencies will conduct a large-scale training drill in the vicinity of the campus residence halls on Tuesday, according to university officials.

The agencies include university police, the FBI, the LAPD and emergency medical personnel from the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Officials said the drill will be held to enhance cooperation among agencies on and off campus and to ensure public safety in case of a future, real emergency.

During the exercise, people near resident halls may hear loud noises including mock gunfire, flash-bang devices and shouting.

From 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, public access will be restricted around Rieber Hall, De Neve Drive, and the parking lots and roadways adjacent to those areas. Only law enforcement officers, emergency response vehicles, other official participants and journalists covering the training event will be allowed access to the area. Some of the official participants will be actors who will pose as wounded gunshot victims.

Officials encourage people who have no essential business in the campus’ northwest area to avoid the area during the drill.

Limited restrictions will also continue Wednesday when crime scene investigators train in the area.
